Rupiah depreciation, which on average is greate than that of neighbouring countries' currency, should in theory have incerased indonesia's international competitiveness. Making use of the input - output analysis, based on the central bureau of statistics' disc version of the 1995 input - output data (172 sectors), the author evaluates the potential capacity of a number of export commodities in stimulating growth, output and income in other sectors. To serve this purpose, the author examines output and income linkages, output and income multipliers, and value - added multiplier of the studied commodities. The results show that non - clothing textile, plywood, wood - , bamboo - , and rattan - household appliances and tyre industries appear to have the largest capacity to stimulate growth in other sectors because they have the highest linkage and multiplier values. Surprisingly, important export commodities such as textile and electronics are shown to have low and moderate stimulating - capacities, respectively, which may relate to their relatively high import components.
