Undeniably, watching films is one of the effective ways to improve ESL students’ listening comprehension skills and their mastery of vocabulary and expressions in English. In order to achieve these goals, ESL teachers must be able to select the appropriate films which suit the students’ abilities. Teaching listening comprehension skills through films to ESL students’ mixed level listening class is not an easy task to accomplish since different students demand different attentions. In ESL listening classes at the University of X, USA, ESL students were taught by different teachers who, of course, had different teaching styles. One of them focused more on playing the films and jotting down the American English vocabulary and expressions on the white board, another teacher concentrated on discussing the important scenes of the film played, while the last one demanded more students’ attention on the objects and the actions the film presented. Students with different abilities will need to be exposed to film watching activities in different approaches or methods. As it was observed, in one occasion, several students of lower level experienced difficulties, while in other occasions, some others of higher level boredom. Discussion when taught by teachers who focused more on the important scenes confused students of lower level and then class activities were only dominated by higher level students. In selecting materials, therefore, teachers will need to be sensitive to the learning needs of each student. To fulfill the students’ learning needs, then teachers will have to pay careful attention to the planning which ranges from sorting out the films and the vocabulary and the expressions taught or explained to leading the discussions taking place in the classrooms.
