Although, the indonesian economy have experienced a turbulence in the second - half of 1997, the economic griwth does not drop as drastically as many have thought. The first - half of the year denotes a 7 percent growth and the incremental production during the year also comes from the investment generated in the previous years. Therefore, the overall eocnomic growth in 1997 is estimated to be at 6.4 percent per year. However, in the coming year of 1998 the economy is expected to slow down to as low as 6 percent per year due to the monetary crisis and other uncertainty revealed. The article also shows that the high - economic growth in the last decades has been based on frail economic fundamentals. A wide saving - investment gap could imply the the high growth has to be maintanined under a high capital inflows. However, a high amount of short - term offshore loans - mostly due this year - was invested in the sectors which could not generate foreign reserves. Economic distortion in domestic production activities is the source of a weak response of international market demand. This condition is very conducive for spectaculator to drain major benefits from the currency market and from the weakness of banking sectors in indonesia. It is suggested that the country needs a solid economic agenda and policy formulation from the government in facing the economic crisis, either for short, medium or long - term scenario.
