Isi artikel
Early and exclusive breastfeeding provides adequate nutritional support for the healthy, full-term infant. Thus, given the normal energy homeostatic mechanism of the newborn, the development of hypoglycemia is not anticipated in the breastfeed infant. As such, clinicians need not routinely monitor glucose levels in the term infant. This article details the principles that underlie these recommendations and outlines a management scheme for detecting those infants at risk for hypoglycemia.
