Isi artikelThe impact of breastfeeding on the infant and child is well known. In the literature on lactation, however, few articles discuss sequelae of breastfeeding in terms of the health of the mother. This review is intended to describe the impact on a woman’s health of having breastfed a child or children. The role of breast development in response to pregnancy and lactation, and the multi-system impact of breastfeeding, logically would result in health sequelae for the mother. These unique aspects of maternal physiology, whether viewed as the fourth stage of labor or as normal female maturation, may change the woman’s physiological milieu and her consequent health. Evaluation of the published research confirms that breastfeeding lowers the risk for premenopausal breast cancer and delays return of fertility post partum. Breastfeeding reduces lifetime menstrual blood loss. Furthermore, some studies indicate that breastfeeding might also reduce the risk for ovarian cancer, reduce the rate or severity of infections, reduce the risk for spinal and hip fracture after menopause, support bonding with the infant, and foster an improved sense of self-esteem and successful mothering. All sequelae noted in this last grouping remain substantially controversial because of difficulties in study design and inconsistent findings.
