Isi artikel
Infants nursed by nutritionally adequate mothers are provided with sufficient energy and the proper profile of nutrients to support normal growth and development without additional foods for 4 to 6 months following birth. In addition, human milk furnishes an array of nonnutrient growth factors, hormones, and other compounds believed to be of benefit to the infant. The mammary gland exhibits metabolic priority for nutrients, often at the expense of maternal reserves. Measurable differences in milk nutrients caused by maternal dietary intake can and do occur, most notably in the vitamin contents. Nutritional guidance should he directed to lactating women because nutrient deficiencies that may impact both the mother and her infant can and do arise during this vulnerable period of the life cycle.
