Isi artikelIn an interview for national magazine, I used the phrase "the CEO is the show dog for the company. The editor was so taken with it that he used that as the cover illustration. Indeed the CEO is similar to show dog. He is foremost in the public view, throughly groomed and trained, carefully presented to the viewers, and is expected to bark only at appropriate times, but not when someone is nipping at his heels. Likewise for years we have all heard the story about the dog who is chasing the car and didn't have the slightest idea what to do when he caught up to it. The new CEO is analogous to this dog. For years you have been working, striving, and perhaps even conniving to get that top job. Now suddenly, the burdens formerly resting on someone else's sholders are yours. No amount of thought or planning can describe the feelings when you assume the mantle of responsibility. I suspect equally rare is the new CEO who found the job exactly as he . she had expected : no changes, no surprises, no sleepless nights. if you are that rare individual, then these following words of advice are not for you.
