Current medical recommendations in the United States reflect in part the cultural norm for breastfeeding. Even without the scientific basis we have today, we should interpret the historical norms for breastfeeding as appropriate weaning only after extended breastfeeding. The accumulated benefits for prolonged breastfeeding should clarify the optimal management for the breastfeeding dyad.
