Shenyang, people's republic of china, the roads out of shenyang were crowded with early morning traffic, Bicycles and people were everywhere, and our driver had to keep the car in the middle of the road to find sufficient space to manuever. Delays occured at every intersection and sometimes included waiting for an occasional pony cart to cross. We finally turned into the factory road. A gray mist of coal smoke from the mud brick bungalows behind the bustling street market filled the air. Then, a very large high walled enclave appeared on the right, looking very much like a military base. This impression was reinforced when we pulled up to a gate manned by security guards. After being passed through without incident, we entered the compound. These were the grounds of the shenyang heavy machinery factory, the largest and most prestigious of its kind in china. The gate led into a large courtyard filled with potted plants and flowers and with a myriad of colourful hanging banners written in beautiful chinese characters. Small roads and walkways led off the courtyard intoa cast array of concrete and brick buildings of all types and sizes. people were passing to and fro at a lerisurely pace. A small group of children walked by with their teacher and several families were getting on large buses parked off to one side. We drove up to a large building in the center and were met by three people standing under a canapy. This was our official greeting party. Smiling boarfly, they were obviously prepared to host their "distinguisehd" foreign visitor.
