Cutbacks in corporate public affairs in corporations such as standard oil, exxon, ARCO, IBM and DuPont, sometimes by as much as 40% have raised questions for public affairs managers about the viability of the public affairs function in a period of increased corporate competition, cost benefit, analysis, and corporate competition, cost benefit analysis, and corporate consolidation and divestiture. Contrary to these impressions, as we will demonstrate, the number of people engaged in the corporate public affairs fucntion actually did not dimish between 1982 and 1986.
