The immunization of mothers during the third trimester of pregnancy is a feasible alternative preventive strategy for the protection of neonates and young infants against serious viral and bacterial infections. Candidate vaccines that are minimally reactogenic, safe, and immunogenic are currently under investigation in pregnant women, as other potential vaccine candidates are under development. Past and present experience of maternal immunization is reviewed in this article.
