Isi artikelRapid progress toward global poliomyelitis eradication led to an evaluation of the routine childhood immunization policy for the prevention of poliomyelitis in the United States. This article describes the current epidemiology of poliomyelitis in the United States (including the burden of oral poliovirus vaccine [OPV] vaccine associated poliomyelitis), highlights the progress toward the global eradication target, illustrates some of the most critical issues that were weighted in the decision-making process, and provides evidence of the impact of the change to a sequential schedule of OPV and inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV). As of January 2000, the recommendations calling for an all-IPV schedule for the United States have been adopted by the policy-making committees and are currently being implemented.
