Isi artikel
In the United States, it is difficult to find an area of greater controversy in the medical literature than the merits of neonatal circumcision. Passionate stances in favor of and against routine newborn circumcision abound in current, widely respected medical journals.4555 The literature is replete with studies of complications and benefits of newborn circumcision. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently published a circumcision policy statement summarizing existing medical data, citing potential medical benefits to the circumcised individual. These data were not sufficient for the panel to recommend routine neonatal circumcision. The panel suggests leaving the decision-making process to parents, who should be provided with accurate and unbiased information. Outside of the United States, debates over neonatal circumcision are far less passionate; most countries seem to believe that the medical benefits are inconsequential, and, thus, that the procedure is medically unnecessary.
