Isi artikelThe quality of dietary fat has a fundamental role in determining the individual fatty acid status. Dietary modulation of the fatty acid status has opened new opportunities to assist the structural and functional development of infants, most crucially in the areas of somatic growth and central nervous system development, which seem to be dependent on an adequate early availability of the n-6 and n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated series. Prevention of adult degenerative diseases, management of immunoallergic disorders, and treatment of inborn errors of metabolism may also benefit from the increased knowledge of the intermediate fatty acid metabolism in mediating many biochemical contexts.
