Few studies have determined the physiologic importance of fiber in the pediatric diet; presumably fiber’s importance for gastrointestinal function is true in children. This article provides information about the chemistry and distribution of dietary fiber and physiologic function that is likely to be important in children, although virtually all of the experimental data reviewed were obtained from adults.
