Progress in nutritional support over the last couple decades had inspired a paradigm shift in why patients are "fed." Nutritional care has progressed beyond mere supply of calories, to provision of specific nutrients with a broad range of specific effects including immune modulation, growth factors, and even alteration of gut microflora. While the true benefits of many of these constituents is still debated, the results from current research are promising, thereby suggesting an established future role that will be broadly accepted. The purpose of this article is to highlight and discuss the roles of several nutrients that are increasingly becoming routine components of the newer enteral formulas.
