The purpose of this article is to elucidate a general approach to the provision of gynecologic health care to adolescent solid organ transplant recipients. The authors address menarche, menstruation, involvement in romantic relationships, sexual activity, and contra¬ceptive options. They also discuss considerations for prescribing a contraceptive method for the treatment of menstrual disorders or birth control. Most female organ transplant recipients achieve menarche, and irregular cycles should be evaluated and managed with the same considerations applied to healthy young women. With careful attention to organ function, other medical problems, and concurrently prescribed medications, many transplant recipients can use hormonal contraception safely.
