Abstract
This paper was a critical evaluation of Talcott Parsons's theory of patient- provider interaction. Parsons's classic model was emphasized on the nature of illness and human interaction. The medical profession was perceived as a social control agent through four roles: technical specificity, affective neutrality, universalism, and functional specificity. The model could not explain the relationship between health care providers and pregnant women, as the four features of doctor's roles and the concept of "sick role" did not meet the needs of pregnant women. Parsons ''s reconsidered model elaborated the relationship between pregnant women and doctor better because the model was developed to explain the trend of acute or chronic illnesses. One fundamental difference in this model was the assumption that being sick was not a deviance.
