Isi artikelThe nonprofit sector, with its roots in volunteerism, increasingly plays a central role in the country’s cultural, economic, and social development. Recent statistics attest to the significance of the sector. A number of elements of nonprofit systems directly affect the development of programmatic initiatives. As service organizations, many nonprofit agencies operate in environments that can be characterized as constrained. For example, nonprofits are typically understaffed but are frequently organized around operating hours designed to meet the needs of their clientele. Acknowledging the vital role of nonprofit organizations in society makes it important to examine both the problems and opportunities human resource managers face in this increasingly important sector. This first symposium on human resource management in nonprofit organizations presents an opportunity to examine the contextual aspects of human resource management in nonprofit organizations from both theoretical and applied perspectives—providing an avenue for interaction and dialogue between practitioners and scholars in the nonprofit arena.
