The growth of scientific knowledge and its applications has vastly reduced the threat of some of man's oldest formidable scourges and raised his material level of living. But in achieving this result, scientific technology has given rise to a host new and profoundly disturbing problems. With respect to this ethical problem, it would not be wise to attempt to rail against the autonomy of scientific community, but it would be just as foolish to think that scientific autonomy is an absolute principle to be applied. Scientist's responsibility could be counted not only on his respect of individual right, according to the principle of autonomy, but also on his ability to promote the good life by respecting man and nature as the absolute other.
