Isi artikelExtrusion processing is a versatile unit operation which can be applied in various industries such as plastic, rubber, food and pharmaceutical. The extrusion cooking is characterized by high temperature and high shear treatment. In food industries, co-rotating twin-screws extruder (TSE) is preferable since it has a number of advantages such as pumping efficiency, good control over residence time distribution, self-cleaning mechanism etc. The design and optimization of the TSE process is usually achieved through an empirical trial and error method that requires great effort and is time consuming. Therefore, an alternative method that supports the design and optimization of the TSE processing is needed such as numerical simulation. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of mesh refinement on the numerical simulation results. In the TSE simulations, the flow domain mesh play important role on the accuracy of the simulation result, therefore the effect of mesh refinement were checked on the radial direction (0 .37 mm and 0.41 mm) and axial direction (2 mm, 1 .5 nim, Imm, 0.5 nim, 0.33 min). The results shows that mesh refinement influence the accuracy of the velocity field and increase the computational cost.
