Because of the high prevalence of sleep problems in children and adolescents and the profound negative impact that pediatric sleeplessness has on daytime functioning, pediatric pracititioners must be aware of not only the causes of sleeplessness but also effective nonpharmacologic treatment of sleep problems. This article provides an overview of common pediatric disorders that present as pediatric sleeplessness and are treated with behavioral interventions for pediatric sleeplessness are needed, behavioral concerns related to bedtime problems, night wakings, insufficient sleep, insomnia and delayed sleep phase sydrome. Behavioral interventions also are used effectively for children with special needs.
