National and state marriage and family therapy organizations describe marriage and family therapists as mental health professionals who are trained to diagnosis and treat mental and emotional disorders as they relate to relationships. The article describes the author’s experiences in completing the master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and the clinical hours required for licensure, as well as his reflections and analysis on how well he was prepared to be a marriage and family therapist.
