Japan's ground self defense force successfully completed its humanitarian and reconstruction support activities in iraq after a two and a half year mission that lasted from the beginning of 2004 until mid 2006. In an editorial on july 19, 2006, the nihon keizai shimbun (the daily for which i work) observed that the GSDF's completion of its mission without suffering a single casuality of firing a single shot was close to a miracle.
