On september 20 the liberal democratic party held an election to pick a successor to its outgoing president, prime minister koizumi junichiro. The victor by a large margin was chief cabinet secretary abe shinzo. In voting by both houses of the national diet six days later. Abe was selected as prime minister, becoming the fifty seventh person to hold this post. Having just turnwed 52 on september 21, he is the youngest new prime minister in japan's post, world war II history (a distinction previously held by the late tanaka kakuei, who took the helm in 1972 when he was 54). And he is the first prime minister to have been born after the end of world war II.
