Isi artikelOne key to the japanese mind is the traditional japanese attitude toward the spirit, and a key to this attitude is the poorly understood element known as mononoke. However, the japanese perception of the spirit world presents both enduring and changing elements, and as that perception has changed, so has the concept of mononoke. We will begin here by examining the concept in its original context, the court literature of the heian period (794 - 1185 ).
