It was the term 1955 setup that cemented this particular year's special palce in japanese history. In 1955 the japan socialist party, which had been divided between right and left wing factions, reunited while japanese conservatives, who had been split between the liberal party and the japan democratic party came together to form the liberal democratic party. The 1955 setup a two party system pitting the LDP against the JSP.
