Some 20 years have passed since the enactment of the equal employment opportunity law, but improvements in the professional standing of working women are still lagging. Japanese wives' average contribution to household income amounts to around 10% a remarkably low figure compared with rates for other highly developed countries. Even though the economy may be improving, many families are unable to maintain a lifestyle free from economic worry while relying on only the husband's income.
