It was the year 2000, and I was in charge of the recruitment office at fujitsu. A university of tokyo student I knew came to me with a question. I can't get any company to give me a job offer, he said. What should i do? i gave him some conventional advice, but still he was unable to secure a position. In the end he was forced to continue his schooling for another year before moving into the world of work. His was not a special case. I recall seeing quite a few university of tokyo students all neatly dressed in dark blue suits resignedly making the rounds of corporate recruitment offices well into summer, when ordinarily they would have been wearing T shirts and heading off for vacations.
