I started elementary school in april 1945, and world war II ended in august that year. So I got my history education under the postwar curriculum. The explanation of the war that we received went like this : The military rose to power in japan and sought to extend their reach overseas, as a result the country plunged into a war, and it was defeated. This was the simplistic level of the discussion of the war that members of my generation heard when we were in school.
