Each summer, in the run up to the august 15 anniversary of the end of world war II, the japanese media shine their spotlight squerely on the yasukuni issue. Put simply, the controversy focuses on whether the prime minister, as official representative of japanese nation, should visit tokyo's yasukuni shrine to pay jomage to the war dead, despite the fact that class a war criminals are enshrined there.
