This paper attempts to analyze the differences on the use of imperatives used by Balinese women and men in their interaction. The research was carried out ethnographically to fourty couples in Buleleng, Bali. The data obtained were in the form of conversational discourse and, therefore, to analyze the data, the author employed the theories from Sociolinguistics and Language and Gender. Based on the results of the data analysis, it was found that both the husband and wife used (i) different types of imperatives in achieving a similar goal (pragmatic synonymy), (ii) similar types of imperatives in achieving different goals (pragmatic homonymy), and (iii) similar types of imperatives in achieving similar goals (pragmatic identity).
