The present paper investigates whether autonomous learning can improve Indonesian learners' proficiency in English. The favorable characteristics of autonomous learning are used as the basis for (I) arguing against the assumption that Asian learners are dependent on their teachers and (2) arguing for its adoption in improving Indonesian college graduates' proficiency in English. The paper also discusses how to incorporate autonomous learning in a competency-based curriculum.
