This feature is an initiative of a network of researchers who met periodically during the period 2002 - 2006 to explore substantive and methodological issues that arise in the analysis of social interactions. The networks decided to focus its attention on profiling because we saw a pressing need to bring serious theoretical and empirical analysisi to bear on a subject of enormous controversy. The result is the set of eight original theoretical and empirical studies presented here. We who have met over the past five years feel that we have learned much about the subtle normative and positive features of profiling problems. We hope that the coordinated publication of these articles will serve to communicate what we have learned and that it will stimulate economists to initiative further study.
