Research Studies in second-language learning clearly indicate that the attitude, motivation, and interest of the learner are factors of crucial importance in determining his achievement. Poor initial motivation may develop from external factors such as a school- or parent- imposed language study that the student does not think of as important to himself. Whatever the reasons, it will be necessary for the teacher, aware of the practical consequences of all negative attitudes, to supply the necessary motivation and to develop the enthusiasm students will need to learn English. Of paramount importance are the teacher's own attitudes toward his students and his subject. He must be sympathetic in understanding his students' feelings, and tactful in presenting or discussing those cultural similarities or differences that may exist between the students' native culture and that of English-speaking societies. Basic, too, in the teaching process are the teacher's skillful planning of learning activities and his ability to give to each student a feeling of success and achievement. Our concern here is with various ways in which the classroom itself and certain kinds of visual instructional material might be used more effectively to develop and sustain motivation, to produce positive attitudes toward English and native English speakers, and to teach or reinforce language-learning skills.
