The college campus presents a unique scenario where older adolescents and young adults find themselves in an independent environment. The students with pre-existing diabetes face immense responsibility regarding their diabetes care and decision making, without the immediate presence of their parents and the pediatric diabetes team. In addition, there are many other students who may be faced with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus first identified in college. Current diabetes management strategies offer comprehensive care, which result in improved glycemic control and near-normal lifestyle. Continued effort at comprehensive diabetes education goes a long way toward giving these students healthy lives. This article reviews issues involving care of college students with diabetes.
