Isi artikel
Streptococcus pyogenes is an improtant pathogene with various virulence factors responsible for its survival and which cause damage in the human body. There is abundant experimental data on these virulence factors including their structure function relationships to describe their role in streptococcal mediated pathogenesis. Several surface exposed virulence factors such as M proteins, sterptococcal C5a peptidase, the immunoglobulin receptor, fibronectin and laminin binding rptoeins are discussed i this review. Each of them has a unique function in different infection steps by collaborating to mitigate or destroy the body's defense mechanisms. In these terms, more than one mechanism can be attributed to interfere with the hist's barrier in both colonization (adhesion / invasion) and in causing damage to the host. On the other hand, two or more virulence factors may contribnute to the same infection step, or alternatively they might operate in different microenvironments. A profound understanding of the mechanisms of action of virulence factors and their specific interaction with the host should be obtained in order to come up with adequate strategies to target and defeat these threatening pathogens.
