The two debates presented below follow a format from a book titled Controversial Issues in Corrections edited by Charles Fields. Although the book addresses many of the contemporary controversial issues in corrections, it was never intended to be an exhaustive collection. Such a collection would fill many volumes. The articles that follow are intended to provide debate on additional topics not covered in the book. The same format from the book is used here; that is, the authors independently were asked to write articles supporting their sides of the issues. Upon completion, each author read the other’s response, and a brief rejoinder then was written to address the arguments presented.We believe that the presentations focus on contemporary issues important to the readership of the Prison Journal.
