This article investigates the role of the time factor (tempo, rhythms, temporalities, etc.) for the concept of sustainable consumption – a factor which has been systematically neglected in the sustainability debate. After presenting some basic considerations regarding the theoretical conception of sustainable consumption, some applications for strategies and policies to further sustainable consumption are shared. This is followed by a chapter on the socalled 'new models of wealth' that are conceived as the ideal way to create more sustainable lifestyles. Here, one of the central visions is the idea of 'wealth in time' complementing 'wealth in goods'. The article concludes with a call for a systematic inclusion of the time factor in a theory of sustainable consumption.
