When I heard that bungei shunju was planning a special feature on japan in the mid 1950s, I thought it was an intriguing idea. The year 1955 was arguably the biggest turning point in the history of modern japan, coming exactly 10 years after the country's defeat in world war II. During those 10 years, japan's ancient regime (the emire of japan) was cast off in this entirely and a completely new state system was constructed, with a brand new constitution. This brought fundamental change to the whole of japanese society, from the country's political and economic institutions to its social systems and event the lifestyles of individual citizens...
