Isi artikel
Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is one of the important neurological diseases, and also the improtant cause of morbidity and mortality particularly among old age. This disease becomes more important as population tend to shift ot the older age group as life expectancy grows longer. CVD often presents as acute attack and consequenlty one of the most common disease seen in acute / emergency (A /E ) department of a hospital. Survey in a hospital in jakarta during 6 month period (january - july 2005) registered 97 cases it is 1,24% of all cases seen in A/E department during that period " 80,41% are older than 50 years of age, with an equal propotion of gender / sex. The type of most cases (50-64.10%) can not be diagnosed clinically until brain CT scan was done, but this may be due to the 24 hour vailability of CT scan facility, so doctors tend to wait for the result of CT scan before making diagnosis. Non hemorrhagic type was more common (48 vs 30 cases) this is in accordance with earlier reports. Subarachnoid hemorrhage was diagnosed in only 5 cases. Three cases formerly suspected as CVD were finally diagnosed as brain tumor (2 cases) and subdural hematoma (1 case). This misdiagnosis should serve as a reminder that there are other diseases that clinically can mimic CVD, and consequenlty brain CT scan should serve as an important diagnostic tool.
