Abstract
This study reports the results of an experiment investigating the writing
performance of two groups of students (experimental group and control group) who
were given slightly different teaching instructions. The experimental group was
exposed to model paragraphs (expository genre), and the control group was taught
writing using the conventional way without the exposure to model paragraphs.
This study has three fundamental objectives. First, it intends to discover what
explanatory factors can contribute to the students’ writing improvement in the two
groups. Second, it investigates what differential effect on writing performance will
the two groups reveal. Finally, it attempts to find out to the extent to which schema
theory can be effective when applied to the teaching of writing.
The theoretical frameworks employed in this study were (1) previous studies
of reading-writing connection, and (2) schema theory. The two groups will be
compared and their overall writing proficiency was evaluated using the ESL
Composition Profile proposed by Jacobs, et al. (1981). Two techniques of analysis
were used to compare the students' writing performance: descriptive statistics and
inferential statistics.
Results from descriptive statistics revealed that the two groups exhibited
writing improvement in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and
mechanics from the pre-test to the post test. The inferential statistics showed that the
experimental group was significantly different from the control group. The
experimental group outperformed the control group in terms of content, organization,
vocabulary, and mechanics. The control group, however, surpassed the experimental
group in terms of language use. As for the schema theory, the present study revealed
that it is effective in improving certain writing aspects.
Based on this result, this study suggests that the teachers of writing provide
good model paragraphs for the students, and that reading be incorporated into the
writing syllabus design.
