This study is concerned with an evaluation of an ESP textbook used at the Lembaga Bahasa LIA Jakarta. The research problem of the study can be formulated into a simple question: “Is the textbook under study adequate for BE trainings? Furthermore, this study will examine the extent to which (1) the ESP textbook under study meets the requirements recommended by the theorists of ESP, (2) the materials in the textbook help develop the learners' business skills, and (3) the textbook writer has implemented the new paradigm in designing and writing ESP material. The theoretical framework of this study basically incorporates a set of criteria as proposed by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) and aspects of ESP featuring recent developments by Dudley-Evans and St John (1998). The data for this study is taken from the textbook under study. The criteria include: time, requirement, audience, aim, content and teaching methodology. Checklists derived from the criteria are used to analyze the data obtained. The analysis comes up with research findings that (1) the time requirement of the textbook is too much for a BE course (2) that the audience for whom the textbook is intended is not specified; (3) that the aim is not specific enough; (4) that the content does not correspond to the learners' need; and (5) that the teaching methodology is not supported by guiding principles which underlies the class activities. To sum up, the study reveals that the textbook is inadequate for BE trainings. Using this textbook, it is likely that the teaching and learning process will not bring about satisfactory results. Should the textbook be used it needs significant reorganization and alteration will be needed. This study is concerned with an evaluation of an ESP textbook used at the Lembaga Bahasa LIA Jakarta.
