A new anti cancer strategy targets cell surface proteins induced by conventional chemotherapy. Drug combinations, laboriously worked out in clinical trials, are the key to most cancer treatments. This was true for the older cytotoxic drugs and remains true in the new age of targeted therapies, most targeted drugs, from monoclonal antibodies to small molecule kinase inhibitors, are still most effective in combinations. Why not then design a combination therapy by developing a targeted agent that specifically kills tumor cells treated with a standard chemotherapy?
