Abstract
This study deals with the teaching of medical vocabulary to medical students. The purpose is to propose a model for teaching the vocabulary in order to help them in learning various medical subjects. The idea of selecting this topic is based on the fact that English is very important for medical students, especially the reading skill and medical vocabulary comprehension (Chia, 1999). Since the curriculum of English for Medical Purposes (EMP) courses have not been established and the needs of the medical students have not yet been well-defined, I have performed some observations on the EMP Courses and conducted a needs analysis among medical students, graduates and lecturers to confirm their actual needs.
The needs analysis was conducted to obtain the information about the actual teaching situation and the perception of medical professionals towards the importance of English, the most important skill and subskill needed, the difficulties in learning medical vocabulary, and the response to the proposed teaching of medical vocabulary. The responses from participants were gathered from structured interviews and questionnaires. All the questionnaire data were collected using MS-Access and analyzed using Software Program for Social Sciences (SPSS).
It appears that 99.3% to 100% of the respondents perceive English as important or very important. The majority of participants believe that reading is the most important skill (47.1% to 100%) and medical vocabulary comprehension is the most important subskill (53.8% to 64%) for medical students. Approximately 76.9% to 86.2% of the participants suggest that the materials should relate to medicine. Further, in designing the materials 75% to 88.5% agree that EMP teachers should consult medical subject lecturers. Most respondents (84.7% to 97.9%) confess that they find it difficult to learn medical vocabulary items, and the most difficult items are the medical vocabulary derived from Greek/Latin or names. Respondents also find it useful to learn medical vocabulary which emphasize Greek/Latin derived items (92.3% to 100%). However, not all of them agree to include it in the EMP course (76.9% to 89.5%).
After confirming the needs of the students, course materials were prepared covering word elements (affixes, roots) from Cohen (1998) and medical vocabulary from the indices of some pre-clinical textbooks. Using the criteria from White (1988) the words were selected. All the medical vocabulary data were collected using MS-Word which was later converted into VB Pro (Miller, 1995) for further analysis. Approximately 450 word elements and 1250 medical vocabulary items were selected. The selected vocabulary were then organized into body system and further subgrouped based on the relatedness with medical subjects which were organized systematically (anatomy, histology, physiology, pathology, diagnostics and therapy). These words were then introduced by implementing implicit teaching and explicit teaching.
From the observation of the EMP courses, it appears that only at Atma Jaya University a number of medical vocabulary are systematically taught in two semesters. Although approximately 600 words are introduced, only 38% are found in the proposed essential medical vocabulary. These words are organized alphabetically instead of body-system based.
Based on the results of the study I would suggest to revise some of the materials to include easier medical vocabulary related to pre-dinical subjects and to use a variety of techniques as proposed.
