Abstract
The English teaching learning activities in Indonesia have adopted a new approach since 1984, i.e. The Communicative Approach. This new approach is supposed to 'produce' high-school graduates with the ability to use the English language in real communication. A question may appear, after the implementation of this approach for about 16 years, whether this approach has made the improvement in English to the high-school students or not. Are they able to speak English, at least do listeners understand them when they speak, after they graduate? Are they able to write in English communicatively?
As the need for the ability to communicate in written English in the global-era through the internet, the second question intrigues me with the idea of making a closer study about it. Do the high-school student have an ability to make a short paragraph in English quite well or not? Do they have the capability of writing correct English? What factors may influence the ability of the students? What factors may distract them from learning to express ideas using written expressions in English as high-school students? Do factors such as teachers, curriculum, the family and the environments around the students support the achievement in the acquisition of the target language? In the process of learning a foreign language, most learners whether they are children or adults, tend to make errors no matter how long they have already studied the language. The errors also vary in frequency or in certain areas of the language. One student may make only a few errors in almost every part of the language, while another student makes many errors in a particular area. These errors can be appeared in lexical, syntactical; or morphological level. The making of errors, according to Corder (see Schochter 1980; 123), is an inevitable and indeed necessary part of the learning process. Therefore, this study focuses on the questions whether there is any relationship between linguistic errors made by students and the clarity of written expressions?
Those questions underline this thesis-making process. The discussion was viewed first from the theories leading us to better understanding toward the process of acquiring the target language, the problems arisen during the process, and some other theories which might help us to analyze what hindrances may occur during the process of learning and how to solve them.
To get factual answers and data for the research, the researcher took the third year students of SMU 24 Jakarta Pusat as the objects of research. They were chosen because they represented the target of research, i.e. Indonesian high-school students. They, moreover, became the deep concern of the researcher for she works in this school as their teacher. The data being collected was analyzed using Daulay, Burt, and Krashen's theory (1982). The researcher considers to choose writing skills as a way to find out the students' errors in a composition and to classify these errors into three main headings/levels and four types of categories. To give scores of students' composition, the writer agreed to use Hartfiel's theory (see Heaton 1980:146).
Using all the data, the' theories, and the analysis, the researcher made favorable and adequate conclusions as the answers to the problem mentioned before. Following the conclusions, some suggestions were made for those who worked in the field of language teaching especially English teaching in Indonesia.
Hopefully the solutions in this thesis will give some contributions for the sake of better teaching learning activities, i.e. English. The result of the study, last but not least, is also intended to help other researchers who are interested to study this subject to get some acknowledged data, facts, and assurance about writing ability of high-school students in Indonesia.
