Abstract
This research uses sentence combining and grammaticality judgment tasks to determine the grammatical competence of a group of 49 Indonesian university students with regard to different types of relative clauses. It is based on the 1977 study by Keenan and Comrie who hypothesized that different relative clause types formed an "accessibility hierarchy" and that the accessibility hierarchy was universal. The hypothesis is still of interest but until now has not been tested with Indonesian learners. The findings of the present research closely correlate with those of Keenan and Comrie and this lends some support to the idea that relative clauses are some sort of language universal. In addition to the theoretical implications, the present research findings should also be of interest to language teachers and syllabus designers because the apparently universal properties of learner behavior with regard to relative clause types provide them with a reliable guide when deciding on sequencing of elements to teach or where to best focus the learner's attention during grammar instruction.
