Abstract
Listening comprehension has attracted the least attention among the four skills. This neglect my stem from the fact that listening is considered a passive skill and from the believe that merely exposing students to spoken language is adequate instruction in listening comprehension
In feet, listening comprehension as one of the four skills ie; listening, speaking, reading and writing plays very important roles not only at beginning stages of second language acquisition, but it appears to be crucially important for advanced learners as well.
According to Underwood (1989:16-20) there are seven potential problems in listening comprehension. (1) lack of control over the speed at which the speaker speaks. (2) inability to get thing repeated, (3) the learner's limited vocabulary, (4) the failure to recognize the signals, (5) problems of interpretation, (6) inability to concentrate, (7) established, learning habits. Therefore based on the problems above, this study is to find and to prove Underwood's seven potential problems which are employed by the successful and unsuccessful students at UPN Veteran Banking Academy Jakarta in Listening Comprehension and what strategies they are used to solve the problems in listening comprehension.
The data of this descriptive study were collected by applying two kinds of instruments: a test and a questionnaire. The two kinds of instrument were administered to forty - three students at UPN Veteran Banking Academy Jakarta as the subject of this study. The data obtained were identified and classified based on the types of the students, kinds of the problems they faced, and the strategies they employed to solve their problems in learning listening comprehension before they were put into percentage.
The result of the study indicates that both successful and unsuccessful claimed to face several problems. The successful students faced nineteen problems, while the unsuccessful ones faced sixteen problems. Both groups of students applied various strategies. In some cases they applied the same strategies, but in some other cases they applied different strategies.
