This thesis deals with the syntactic negation of simple sentences with the English not, no, neither, neither ... nor, and not only .. . but also, compared with the Indonesian tidak, bukan, belum, Jangan, tidak/bukan . . . dan tidak/bukan juga, and tidak/bukan hanya . . . tetapi Juga. The structural desciptions of simple sentence negation of both languages are based on the method of distribution and the technique of paraphrasing to see their similarities and differences. Through a contrastive analysis of their grammatical structures, the similarities and differences of simple sentence negation between English and Indonesian can be grouped into four catagories: (1) the same media with different items, (2) different media with different items, (3) the same systems with different items, and (4) different systems with different items. Those structures which are different are supposed to be learning problems for the Indonesian students learning English. |
