During the final 220 years of colonial rule in Indonesia, there was a monument in Batavia which more than any other displayed to the public the horrific futility of betraying authority : The Head of Pieter Erberveld. The wall-like monument was graced with a plastered skull impaled upon a metal spike, and decorated with inscriptions intended to perpetuate the enraged feelings of the Dutch towards the Erberveld rebellion.
